Norma Kamali is an American fashion designer and pioneer, best known for the sleeping bag coat. Born in New York City, she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and earned a degree in illustration. In 1969 she opened a small boutique, and became known for her line of clothing made of real silk parachute material. Norma designed Farrah Fawcett’s swimsuit in that iconic 1976 poster, as well as a bathing suit worn by Whitney Houston on the back cover of her 1985 debut album. She was the first designer to create an online store on eBay, and also produced a collection for Walmart. Norma still lives in New York City and is still designing at 76 years old.
