#115: Matthew Baker: On The Realities of America
Today’s guest is author Matthew Baker. Read his book Why Visit America. Matthew Baker is the author of the story collection Why Visit America, which came out this August and is currently based in New York City. He was named one of Variety’s “10 Storytellers To Watch,” and his stories have appeared in publications such as New York Times Magazine, The Paris Review, American Short Fiction, One Story, Electric Literature, and Conjunctions, and in anthologies including Best American Science Fiction And Fantasy. Born in the Great Lakes region of the United States, he currently lives in New York City. As I have mentioned before on this show, I am in love with this short story collection. Why Visit America: is a collection of thirteen parallel-universe stories that span all fifty states of the country, and that together are meant to create a composite portrait of the real United States: a Through The Looking-Glass reflection of who we are as a country. It is supremely timed - and themed - chronicling several of the iniquities that we struggle within the West. The judicial system, immigration, misogyny, consumerism and even the question of secession within the union. We spoke in August, and Matthew had a lot to say about the way we look at America, and indeed the West right now.
