Finding Purpose Beyond Motherhood: Overcoming Burnout and Supporting Unwed Moms with Dr. Rhonda Simmons
In this episode, I had the incredible privilege of sitting down with Dr. Rhonda Simmons, founder of The Simmons Empowerment Foundation, Inc. (TSEFI), to discuss an inspiring and heartfelt journey through burnout, purpose, and compassion. Dr. Simmons is an advocate for teen moms and families, and her work is transforming communities in the U.S. and even as far as Nairobi, Kenya. During our conversation, Dr. Simmons opened up about her personal experiences with burnout while building her foundation, which she described as her “baby.” I could truly relate to the depth of responsibility and emotional investment that comes with creating something meaningful. We spoke about the pressure of giving your all, while sometimes overlooking the toll it takes on mental and emotional well-being. One of the most touching parts of our conversation was Dr. Simmons’ work with unwed teen mothers. She shared the story of a community baby shower she organized—one that was so much more than the typical gathering. Partnering with a local pregnancy center, her foundation provided these young mothers with essential supplies and educational resources from healthcare providers, doulas, and community leaders. The impact she’s made in her local community, as well as through the recent launch of her foundation’s work in Kenya, is truly remarkable. Dr. Simmons and I also delved into the importance of acknowledging feelings of regret and burnout and finding ways to heal. For those of you who are childless by choice or circumstance, this episode is a reminder that you are not defined by your reproductive status. You have a purpose, and your contributions to the world are invaluable. Join me as I explore the themes of nurturing, faith, and resilience with Dr. Rhonda Simmons.
