Workplace Jealousy: Defeating the Green Eyed Monster
As monsters go, Jealousy is one of the scariest. Nothing makes you feel less safe than being the target of someone's envy. You don't know who you can trust or what (mis)perceptions your coworkers might have about you. Listen in to learn how to thrash Ol'Green Eyes. Jealousy feeds on lack. Any situation where resources like a promotion, raise, leadership role, positive attention, etc. are scarce can spawn it. Jealousy uses confirmation bias as a weapon. When someone is jealous, they become blind to a person's good qualities and hyper fixated on their shortcomings. You can use Jealousy as a mirror. When you understand what activates it, you can gain a lot of clarity about the big picture and interpersonal dynamics. Comparisons with others give Jealousy superpowers. Comparisons to your past selves gives you superpowers as you appreciate how far you've come. Remember to factor in personal priorities so you see your whole life, not just your work life. Collaborations are a Jealousy repellent because they create "parallel" work opportunities help everyone play to their strength instead of wasting energy trying to one up each other.
