Jessi Hempel always knew she wanted to be a writer. From the time she won her grade school writing contest, she knew she was destined to share her gift of the written word. It was a surprise, then, when her success as a tech writer for such magazines as Fortune and Wired ceased to feel as fulfilling as it once had. Many people reach this point in their careers; the excitement ebbs, the shine wears off. Few people take the leap and try something new. Jessi, however, did just that. Spurred by personal hardship, she seized the opportunity to dive into the unknown, striking forth in a new direction with the knowledge that she could never again pursue work that didn’t resonate with the deepest levels of her heart.
