Lamont Carey is a returning citizen with a violent record who has dedicated his career since release to advocating for the rights and empowerment of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, particularly Black men who are disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system. He was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser in Washington, DC, which is one of the few jurisdictions in the country that allows currently incarcerated individuals to exercise their right to vote. On behalf of the Mayor, his office serves as the District of Columbia’s coordinating and advisory agency for reentry.
