PADRES POSTCAST: San Diego PADRES COME UP SHORT in Slugfest, DROP OPENER to Cardinals 9-7 @St Louis

Yu Darvish gave up a pair of 3-run home runs in the 2nd inning as part of disastrous start that saw him get tagged for 8 earned runs on 8 hits in just 3 1/3 innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 9-7 in the opener of a 4-game series at Busch Stadium.   Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., had 3 hits- including a homer- apiece for the Padres.   The too 4 hitters in the Padres lineup- Tatis, Luis Arraez, Machado and Jackson Merrill- combined to go 10-19 with 5 RBI’s and 6 runs scored.   Brendan Donovan and Wilson Contreras each hit a 3-run shot in the 2nd inning off Darvish, making his 4th start of the season coming off an elbow injury.   Willson drove in 4 runs, and Donovan added 3 hits. Iván Herrera chipped in with 3 hits and 2 RBI, including a solo HR in the 6th.   Sonny Gray (10-4) gave up 7 runs — 6 earned — on 11 hits with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings to pick up his 1st career win when allowing 7 runs.   Tatis led off the 3 with a home run, his 17th. Manny added a 2-run bomb that made it 7-5.   Contreras drove in Donovan with a 2-out double off Darvish (0-3) in the 1st.   Victor Scott II drew a leadoff walk, stole 2nd base and move to 3rd on a groundout and scored on Iván Herrera's single to make it 8-5 in the 4th.   Gavin Sheets had an RBI groundout and Xander Bogaerts scored when Bryce Johnson reached on a throwing error in the 5th.   Contreras homered- the 3rd of the day allowed by Yu- to make it 7-2 in the second.   The Cardinals are 173-87 all-time at home against San Diego, a .665 win percentage.   ***** ‘LIVE’ Instant Reaction from Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber ——-   The Pads and Cardinals play game 2 of this 4-game series tomorrow night in St. Louis.   Nick Pivetta (10-2, 2.81 ERA) will start for the Padres, facing the Cardinals’ Miles Mikolas.
