PADRES POSTCAST: NICK PIVETTA, Punchless San Diego PADRES SHUT OUT 3-0 by Lowly Colorado Rockies

The injury plagued Padres managed just 2 hits in 8 innings off Kyle Freeland, (4-14, 5.10 ERA) Nick Pivetta tossed 6 solid innings, Hunter Goodman homered and doubled in a run,  and the lowly Colorado Rockies (40-101) shut out the Pads 3-0 in the series opener in Denver.   Freeland retired the first 13 Pads’ hitters before Ramón Laureano’s 5th-inning double.   Jose Iglesias singled with 2 outs in the 8th for the only other Padres hit off Freeland, tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and threw just 88 pitches in a true master performance.   The Padres’ 1st 2 hitters got on base to start the 9th against Victor Vodnik, but Manny Machado hit into a double play to end the game.   Pivetta (13-5) gave up  7 hits but just 2 runs in 6 innings- a rare quality start at Coors Field for the Padres’ best pitcher this season, who came into tonight’s start with a career ERA of 17.36 at Coors Field, and had gotten ripped by the Rockies here in May., Pivetta’s record following a Pads’ loss fell to 9-4.   Rockies’ catcher Hunter Goodman  hit his 28th home run to open the scoring in the 3rd inning for the Rockies. Jordan Beck hit an RBI single in the 5th make it 2-0. Goodman added an RBI double to make it 3-0 in the 7th.   The Padres’ best chance to score came after Laureano’s 1-out double in the 5th, but Jackson Merrill flew out and Iglesias struck out to end the inning.   The loss is the Padres’ 9th in the last 11 games. They are still just 2 games behind the 1st-place LA Dodgers in the NL West race with 21 games left. The Dodgers have lost 6 of their last 7 games.   The Pads are tied with the New York Mets for 2nd place- 5 games behind the 1st-place Chicago Cubs and just 4 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants- in the NL Wild Card standings.   The Padres placed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes on the injured list with left biceps tendinitis, retroactive to September 4th.   ***** ‘LIVE’ Instant Reaction from Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber ——-   The Padres and Rockies play game 2 of this 3-game series tomorrow, with 1st pitch set for 5:10pm PT.   Randy Vásquez (3-6, 3.96 ERA) will be recalled from Triple-A El Paso and face Rockies rookie McCade Brown.
