NT Police pledge to stamp out racism within force
A warning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners that this story mentions the name of an Indigenous person who has died, used with the permission of their family. The person in charge of cultural reform at Northern Territory Police Leanne Liddle says the difficult process to restore trust in the police force begins now. This is in the wake of the NT coroner's inquest findings into the fatal police shooting death of Kumanjayi Walker. On Monday the long-running inquiry into the 19-year-old's death came to a close, with the NT Coroner concluding the former constable — who shot Mr Walker — was racist and that NT Police displayed the 'hallmarks of institutional racism'. But she could not 'exclude the possibility' that racist attitudes 'were a contributing cause of Kumanjayi's death' in 2019.Guest: Leanne Liddle, Executive Director of the Northern Territory Police Force's Cultural Reform CommandProducer: Lexie Jeuniewic
