Micro Episode: The Seeds, Realities and Aftermath of Genocide
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses sensitive topics that are not suitable for children and may be triggering to many adults. These topics include genocide, murder, suicide and rape. Listener discretion is strongly advised. South Africa instituted proceedings against Israel on December 29th, 2023 alleging that Israel has committed, and is committing, genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza strip and that Israel is in contravention of the Genocide convention. Israel rejects these allegations, and has argued that the war in Gaza is being fought in self-defense against Hamas. Israel believes that this case, being heard in the International Court of Justice, is an attempt to "pervert the meaning" of the term genocide. In this micro episode, we touch upon genocides that have occurred in recent memory, their origins, and the aftermath in the hope to provide some context for consideration of the term. This is an excerpt of a larger episode published in July 2023 entitled Genocide: In Conversation with Dara Solomon of the Toronto Holocaust Museum in which we explore the definition of genocide, how genocide has been exacted upon people and the real and horrible legacy it leaves in its wake. Genocide is a terrible truth. It is incumbent upon us all to educate ourselves on the shape it can take, even in its earliest stages so that we can learn to prevent it, or at the very least, stand in its path. Article II of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as the following: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
