Learning to work hard in the dark to win in the light with Anthony Trucks | EP110
Episode 110! Today’s guest is Anthony Trucks. At the age of three years old, Anthony was abandoned by his biological mother and placed into the foster care system, a system where 50% of kids will end up homeless upon aging out of the system, and 75% of prison inmates in the U.S. are former foster kids. His future did not look bright. For much of his childhood, Anthony felt adrift, unworthy and listless, living in survival mode, just trying to make it to the next day, week and year in one piece. He faced tremendous abuse at the hands of his foster parents. At the age of 14, Anthony was adopted, and he began to apply himself. He saw a pattern of being good at setting a goal, overcoming a wall, and finally achieving the goal. He began to derive great satisfaction from his ability to grind it out until he achieved his set goals. In high school, he set the goal of making his varsity football team with very few skills and by his senior year not only had he achieved the goal of making the team, he was offered a full ride scholarship to the University of Oregon. Anthony then went on to achieve the ultimate goal of reaching the NFL, making the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster. At 25, he had a beautiful wife, a son and a bright future ahead. Or so he thought. Due to a fluke shoulder injury, Anthony"s NFL career ended abruptly. Within two-months, he was a personal trainer at his local gym and was unable to support his family. He pivoted to being a business owner, owning his own gym, and while some financial success came, his family life, marriage, and health were crushed under the weight of keeping a new business afloat. His business eventually went bust and, feeling himself an utter failure, he considered ending it all. Fortunately, Anthony didn’t take his own life, and one conversation changed everything. A friend told Anthony he considered him an inspiration and a hero because of all he had overcome. For the first time, Anthony considered if he could be an inspiration to others. He focused on making the change necessary to serve and lift up others and help them through their own frustrations, fears and struggles. You"re going to love Anthony"s inspiring story and his big heart for helping others work hard in the dark, so they can win in the light.
