So, it’s that time of year again- a time where we honor and show love and care through gift-giving. Sara talks about the points to think of when figuring out individual gifts. She definitely wants us to know that often times, the best gifts are not bought at a store. There are gifts of “experiences” for the recipient and/or the giver and recipient together. Sometimes there can be home-made gifts like pottery or a meaningful framed photograph. Sometimes it can be a concept: Sara shares that one year she gave her sons money and gave them explicit instructions about talking to a financial planner and helped them begin to understand the world of savings, investing, and looking towards their financial future. It was something the boys did together and was meaningful in a different way than a store bought gift. So, how do you start to think of meaningful gifts for those you care about? First is to pay attention to what the person likes. Sara so appreciated when Joe knew the shampoo and conditioner she always uses, and made sure to have it in his bathroom for her. It shows caring and noticing what brings the other person some joy. Here are some steps from Sara: Pay attention to what each person likes, what they mention they need, etc. Give experiences you know fits the person or something you know they have been hesitant to take the first step. It can be hiking a mountain together and getting them some of the gear, etc. Notice what’s important to their own goals and dreams. Help them towards that. Know their values. It can be anything from guitar lessons to some part of starting a business, etc. Most important is to get creative, don’t assume you need to get a sweater at the store (though that’s great, too). There are many things you can do or make that truly value the person and show how much you care about them. And finally, find the JOY in GIVING this holiday season!!!
