
Vampires can be repelled by garlic, don’t appear in mirrors, and avoid sunlight. Why? Well, garlic is an anti-parasitic, mirrors don’t reflect apparitions of the mind, and porphyria is an accepted medical condition causing severe sensitivity to sunlight. Combined with hysteria resulting in the digging up of an embalmed corpse, which doesn’t seem to be decomposing, and which may even have fluids like blood or mercury leaking from its orifices, culminates in modern and ancient vampire lore. But not all vampires have the same cravings. The Ekimmu drink blood, the Upir feed on corpses, and the jiangshi drain energy. Recently there have been circulating videos, again, of a substance called red mercury which appears to possess qualities associate with vampires. The problem is most of the videos are obvious fakes. However, red mercury, even though not an official workable substance, has been used as a code for materials coming from Russia, or the former Soviet Union. Some mercury compounds may also appear red.
