Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Charlene, Singer, “I’ve Never Been To Me”, Songwriter & Author About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Charlene, is a popular singer, songwriter, record producer and author who was the first white female singer to be signed to the Motown label. She’s been immortalized for her hugely popular, worldwide mega-hit song, “I’ve Never Been to Me”, which was originally released in 1977, and then took the world by storm in 1982. And THEN, the song had another resurgence in popularity in 1994 when it was featured in the terrific movie, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”. Our guest has released 6 albums, entitled, “Charlene”, “Songs of Love”, “Used to Be”, “I’ve Never Been to Me”, “The Sky is the Limit”, and “Hit and Run Lover”. Some of her other hit singles from back in the 70s and 80s are “It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down”, “Freddie”, “Hungry”, “Used to Be”, “I Want to Go Back There Again” and “We’re Both in Love With You”. She appeared in the movie, “The Last Dragon”, in which she sang her hit single, “Fire”. Her song, “It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down” was featured in the movie, “The Last American Virgin”. And her song “I’ve Never Been to Me” has been featured not only in “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” but in over a dozen other movies and TV shows including “Me Without You”, “This is Us”, “You Were Never Really Here”, “The Simpsons” and “The Flight Attendant”. In recent years, our guest has been recording under her actual name, “Charlene Oliver”, and she’s released some great dance hits like “Heard You on the Radio”, “Destiny”, “Fairytale Life”, “California Dreamin’”, “Broken Woman”, “Emotional Scars”, “Why Can’t Time Stand Still”, and a fabulous dance version of her classic hit song, “I’ve Never Been to Me”. Our guest has also written 3 books: a memoir called “I’ve Never Been to Me”, a children’s book called “The Life and Tails of Herman the Worm”, and a highly compelling Holocaust novel called “Orphan Train”.
