Fearless Fabulous Women of Champagne in History and Today
Benedictine monk, Dom Pérignon, may have seen stars when he tasted his first bottle of bubbly before it officially became Champagne. But four women became Champagne’s leading ladies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each built successful champagne houses after their husbands died unexpectedly. These Veuves (French for Widows) are Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (Veuve Clicquot), Louise Pommery, Champagne Pommery, Mathilde Emilie Perrier, Laurent-Perrier and Madame Elisabeth “Lily” Bollinger.
