Sydney Lanier was for years famous as the poet of the confederacy. Southern boys and girls would memorize large swatches of The Song of the Chattahoocheee and The Marshes of Glynn. Except for his time as a prisoner in the Union POW camp, however, little was known about Lanier's short 39 year life. May Lamar of Montgomery, AL has done her research and written an engaging biographical novel dramatizing Lanier's college days. He struggles with illness and poverty during reconstruction and his fierce determination to be an artist. Don spoke with May Lamar at the annual Alabama Writer's Symposium in Monroeville, AL.
