Banana splits were the brainchild of David Evans Strickler, a pharmacist’s apprentice in Latrobe, Pennsylvania who enjoyed experimenting with new soda fountain sundaes in his free time. They were so popular with the college crowd that students willingly paid 10 cents, double the price of a normal sundae. Then Charles Rudolph Walgreens of the Walgreens drug store started promoting the banana split as their premium soda fountain dessert...then soda fountains and ice cream shops all over the country started selling them! In 2016, the United States Post Office honored the banana split and the town of Latrobewith a "forever stamp" depicting the banana split. It was one of five stamps in the "Soda Fountain Favorites" series. Traditionally served in a long dish called a boat...you cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana but you can put any flavor of ice cream and toppings that you like.
