It's Casual Friday, the first of 2024! Sam and Emma round up the short week in news, joined by Ryan Grim. Ryan Grim then joins, as he reflects on US State Department Spox. Matthew Miller’s response to Grim’s recent questions on South Africa’s suit against Israel over their crimes of genocide in Gaza, and the likelihood of State Department officials becoming implicated, before they step back and walk through the greater basis for South Africa’s case, and where the US' complicity comes into play. Expanding on this, they walk through the cratering opinion of Israel both domestically and internationally, the incredible media bubble that the Israeli population lives under, and the intense sphere of IDF control around any news coming out of Israel or Palestine, before briefly touching on the extent of the political cost Biden is willing to acknowledge (much less respond to).
