This week on the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes cartoonist Jay Martin to the program to discuss his graphic novel Yellow and much more! Martin started his career as a cartoonist, creating the nationally syndicated strip Tommy before segueing into film and working as storyboard artist on such films as The Amazing Spider-Man 2,  Constantine, I Am Legend, Ad Astra, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. He directed his first music video for Death Cab for Cutie’s The New Year and has continued on, directing clips for a wide variety of artists – Kelly Clarkson, Shawn Mendes (Stitches, Mercy, Never Holding Me Back, In My Blood, Lost in Japan), Tiesto & Post Malone (Jackie Chan), Cold War Kids, Nas, Melissa Etheridge, Christina Perri and many, many more. In 2015, he wrote and directed his first feature film, 7 Minutes starring Jason Ritter, Luke Mitchell and Kris Kristofferson. In 2018 his video for Shawn Mendes In My Blood was nominated for three MTV VMAs including Best Direction. In 2019, he executive produced the Blumhouse feature Don’t Let Go starring David Oyelowo and Storm Reid. Jay Martin released his original graphic novel, Lost Boy, in August 2023 from Dark Horse with letters by Frank Cvetkovic. While his latest graphic novel, Yellow, hits bookstores everywhere on December 17, 2024 and comic shops on December 18. Martin is also serving as storyboard artist for Sony's Spider-Man Noir television series featuring Nicolas Cage set to stream on MGM+.
