“Astronomical Indiana Jones” is what colleagues from NASA call #astrophysicist Sara Seager . Her research is focused on the discovery and analysis of “exoplanets” (planets orbiting other stars) and she is working on finding those rare ones that are most like our Earth. For her work, the American Astronomical Society awarded Seager the Helen B. Warner Prize, which is presented annually to promising young astronomers. Seager derived her own equation for estimating the number of habitable planets in our galaxy, which is in conflict with the Drake equation (no relation to Drake - the source of memes). That classic formula was created in 1961 and included parameters like a planet’s ability to release signals into space. Seager suggested that the main condition for a planet’s ability to sustain life was not its propensity to radiate signals into space but the presence of so-called “biosignature” gasses. Curious to learn more about Dr. Seager’s research and the Galactic Indiana Jones herself?
