Dr. Jan Canty is a Detroit native, seasoned psychologist, author, speaker, educator, and host of the Domino Effect of Murder podcast. With over four decades of experience in the mental health field, she holds a terminal degree in psychology and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in family therapy at Wayne State University School of Medicine. In July 1985, Jan’s life took a tragic and unexpected turn when her husband of 11 years went missing. A week later, she was called to the Detroit Homicide Division and informed he was the likely victim of a violent crime. His body was later identified at the Wayne County Morgue, marking the beginning of a 30-year chapter of private grief and survival. Jan quietly relocated to the Midwest, where she continued teaching psychology while keeping her personal story hidden. After decades of silence, she now shares her experience to help others navigate the complicated aftermath of homicide and violent loss—both through a professional lens and as a survivor herself. Today, she hosts the internationally heard podcast Domino Effect of Murder, now in its sixth season and reaching listeners in over 22 countries. She’s also the author of A Life Divided, a personal memoir, and What Now? Navigating the Aftermath of Homicide and Suicide, a comprehensive guide for survivors. Her upcoming book, Rekindled: Healing Grief, will explore the science and stories of after-death communication. Dr. Canty is also an active advocate for the Innocence Project, working to raise awareness and support for those affected by wrongful convictions and violent crime.
